With the objective to evaluate the magnitude of bite problem by dog attack to the people in the city of Santiago, Chile, according to the age of the bitten person, place of occurrence, origin of the biting animal and existence of vaccination, a survey was carried out by personal interview to owner houses of 9,414 houses randomly chosen in 28 communes of the city. A total of 41,496 people were involved in the sample. The results indicated that the bite by dog attack, is a serious problem of public health in the city of Santiago. The mean annual bite rate was 1,262 per 100,000 inhabitants.
