Lasers for modern industrial and research applications are required to provide a high average beam power and at the same time be reliable, efficient, and compact. Rare-earth doped single-mode fiber lasers are the most promising solution. Large mode area fibers are effectively used to reduce nonlinear effects and scaling up the beam power which is now bounded by thermal effects.
