A doença de Alzheimer é o tipo de distúrbio neurológico com maior incidência na população em envelhecimento. O principal marcador fisiopatológico da doença é a placa amiloide, caracterizada pelo depósito de fibrilas formadas pela polimerização do peptídeo ß amiloide. Além disso, há de se relatar a importância dos astrócitos na fisiopatologia da doença, sendo um dos principais marcadores celulares a proteína S100B, a qual acredita-se interagir com o peptídeo.
