The past decade has seen a growing appreciation for the role of the innate immune response in mediating repair and biomaterial directed tissue regeneration. The long-held view of the host immune/inflammatory response as an obstacle limiting stem cell regenerative activity, has given way to a fresh appreciation of the pivotal role the macrophage plays in orchestrating the resolution of inflammation and launching the process of remodelling and repair.
