Deep crustal structure and petroleum potential of the sedimentary basins of western Algeria

The study of the deep structure of continental margins is a crucial step toward the understanding of their geodynamic evolution. Such a study should result in major societal implications in terms of seismic risk and oil resources. Located in North Africa, the Algerian margin is bordering the Algerian basin, a back-arc basin formed in the back of the Tethyan subduction. The margin is composed of AlKaPeCa (standing for Alborán, Kabylia, Peloritan and Calabria) blocks accreted to the African Margin. Theses blocks, presently scattered around the Western Mediterranean Sea were part of the European Margin. In Algeria the outcrops known near Tenes, constitute the westernmost witness of the AlKaPeCa blocks - which reappear further west in the Moroccan Rif. The originality and the importance of the study of this segment of the margin which extends from Tenes to Mostaganem over 250 km, lies in its pivotal position between the continental Alborán domain to the West and the Algerian Basin to the East, its ENE-WSW trend which contrasts with the E-W Algerian Margin to the east and finally its morphology with a steep continental slope. As part of this work, we determined accurately and for the first time, the structure and the crustal nature of the western segment of the Algerian margin using the tomographic inversion of the seismic traveltime recorded along a N-S wide-angle seismic profile shot perpendicular to the margin. Thanks to the processing and the migration of the multichannel reflection seismic data acquired during SPIRAL (R/V Atalante 2009), and to industrial data (seismic and magnetic) acquired in the past, we also have proposed a regional tectonic pattern and the possible offshore extension of the AlKaPeCa basement The interpretation of these results reveals that the margin is characterized by the juxtaposition of a thin oceanic crust to the North and a slightly thinned continental crust to the South on either side of a major vertical accident. This result suggests that the margin is not an extensional margin but is rather formed in a strike-slip context. The opening of the oceanic basin should result from the response to the retreat and to the tear of the lithospheric slab beneath the Gibraltar eastward subduction, accompanied by the westward migration of the Alborán block. The propagation of this lithospheric tearing at the Subduction-Transform Edge Propagator (STEP) generated a zone of strike-slip along the narrow ocean-continent transition which is outlined at the surface by a narrow trough. The seismic facies observed along most of the seismic reflection lines and the magnetic data allow us to identify a fragment of the AlKaPeCa basement beneath the continental slope. Hence, the onshore outcrops known at cape Tenes, possibly extend westward at least to the latitude of Mostaganem. Besides, the active tectonic inversion known to the east, along the central and eastern Algerian margin appears to stop at the latitude of Tenes. The absence of offshore deformation along the segment of the margin from Tenes to Mostaganem coincides with a gap of seismicity. We interpret the lack of tectonic inversion along this segment as related to the mechanical resistance of the margin because of rapid change from oceanic crust to a slightly thinned continental crust. Finally, owing the origin of the basin, the nature of the crust and the thickness of its sedimentary cover and compared with other regions of the world, the areas which can likely present oil potential are the ones located on the continental crust.L’étude de la structure géologique profonde d’une marge constitue une étape cruciale dans la compréhension de son évolution géodynamique, d’une telle étude devrait découler des implications sociétales majeures en termes de risque sismique et de ressources pétrolières. Située au nord de l'Afrique, la marge algérienne borde le bassin algérien, formé en position de bassin arrière-arc de la subduction Téthysienne. La marge est constituée des blocs AlKaPeCa (pour Alborán, Kabylia, Peloritan et Calabria) accrétés à la marge africaine. Ces blocs, actuellement dispersés autour de la Méditerranée occidentale faisaient autrefois partie de la marge Européenne. En Algérie, l’affleurement connu à Ténès constitue le dernier témoin à terre des blocs AlKaPeCa qui réapparaissent plus à l’ouest dans le Rif marocain. L’originalité et l’importance de l’étude du segment de marge qui s’étend de Ténès à Mostaganem sur environ 250 km, résident dans sa position charnière entre le domaine continental d’Alborán à l’Ouest et le bassin océanique algérien à l’Est. Il présente une orientation, ENE-WSW alors que le reste de la marge algérienne est globalement orienté E-W, et une morphologie avec une pente continentale très abrupte. Dans le cadre de ce travail nous avons déterminé avec précision et pour la première fois, la structure et la nature de la croûte du segment occidental de la marge algérienne, à partir de l’inversion tomographique des temps de trajet des données de sismique grand-angle obtenues sur un profil N-S perpendiculaire à la marge. Grâce au traitement et à la migration des données de sismique réflexion multitrace acquises pendant la campagne SPIRAL (2009, N/O Atalante) et aux données industrielles (sismiques et magnétiques) acquises par le passé, nous avons aussi pu proposer un schéma tectonique régional et une cartographie de l’extension possible du socle AlKaPeCa en mer. L’interprétation des résultats révèle une marge caractérisée par la juxtaposition d’une croûte océanique peu épaisse au nord et d’une croûte continentale faiblement amincie au sud de part et d’autre d’un accident majeur quasi-vertical. Ce résultat suggère que la marge n’est pas une marge continentale en extension mais qu’elle résulte plutôt du fonctionnement d’un décrochement majeur. L’ouverture du bassin océanique résulterait alors de la réponse au retrait et à la déchirure du panneau lithosphérique en subduction sous l’arc de Gibraltar à l’Est, accompagné par la migration du bloc Alborán vers l’Ouest. La propagation de cette déchirure (STEP) a généré une zone de cisaillement qui se focalise dans l’étroite zone de transition océan-continent et est marquée en surface par un étroit fossé. Le faciès sismique observé sur les profils de sismique réflexion et les données magnétiques ont permis d’identifier un fragment du socle AlKaPeCa sous la pente et au pied de la marge continentale. De ce fait les affleurements connus à terre, au cap de Ténès, se prolongeraient vers l’ouest au moins jusqu’à la latitude de Mostaganem. Par ailleurs, l’inversion tectonique subactuelle qui affecte plus à l’Est la marge algérienne centrale et orientale semble s’arrêter à la latitude de Ténès. Cette absence de déformation en mer dans le segment de Ténès à Mostaganem coïncide avec une lacune de sismicité que nous interprétons comme liée à la résistance mécanique de la marge avec un passage rapide de la croûte océanique à une croûte continentale peu amincie. Enfin, compte tenu de l’origine du bassin, de la nature du socle et de l’épaisseur de sa couverture sédimentaire et par comparaison avec d’autres régions du monde, seules les zones situées sur la croûte continentale pourraient présenter un potentiel pétrolier
