The wreckage of the tanker AMOCO CADIZ occurred on March 16, 1978. 223 000 metric tons of crude oil were spilled along the coasts of northern Brittany. During the first month, the spatial evolution of the pollution was mainly determined by the wind drift. The oil slick spreaded from west to east over 350 Km of coast line. The most severe effects of pollution were observed in estuaries and closed bays. Mass mortality affected the marine fauna of the rocks and beaches living above and below lowest tide level. These mortalities occurred mainly within a range of 5 Km arounded the wreck and in distant points of accumulation of the oil within a range of 100 Km. The decontamination started in May.
