Correlation between Students Self-confidence and English Speaking Skills at Eleven Grade Language Class in SMAN 8 Malang

This research was conducted because self-confidence has an important role in students’ speaking skills. In this research, the researcher wanted to find out whether there was any notable correlation between students’ self-confidence and English speaking skill in the eleven-grade language class students in SMAN 8 Malang. It is expected to know whether students’ self-confidence correlates or not with their speaking skills. Correlational research was used in the research design. Personality tests were used as the instruments for measuring students’ self-confidence. Retelling a short story about activity during a pandemic was used for measuring students’ speaking skills. The population of this research was 30 students in an eleven-grade language class at SMAN 8 Malang in the academic year of 2020/2021 which consisted of one class. The sample was 30 students taken by simple random technique. The research was conducted on 24 March 2022. To discover the students’ self-confidence and their speaking skill correlate or not, the researcher used the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The results of the research showed that there was a very low correlation between students’ self-confidence and their speaking skill in the eleven-grade language class in SMAN 8 Malang academic years 2020/2021. The researcher found that the coefficient of correlation between students’ self-confidence and their speaking skills at SMAN 8 Malang was 0.093, which based on the table of the correlation strength level meant that it was a very low level of correlation because it has a value in the range of 0 – 0.20
