THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS' SPEAKING SKILLS AND THEIR SELF-CONFIDENCE AT ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

The objective of this research is to find out whether there is correlation between students’ speaking skills and their self-confidence or not. This research is a correlational study with speaking skills as the independent variable (X) and self-confidence as the dependent variable (Y). This research took 11 students of F small class in 5th semester ELED UMM as the sample. The researcher used speaking test to obtain the data of students’ speaking skills, and questionnaire to obtain the data of students’ self-confidence. In correlating those two variables, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment formula and was helped by SPSS v.26 application. The findings of this research show that the result of Pearson Product Moment is higher than the r_table with N=11 in the level of significance 5% (.869 >.602). The alternative hypothesis is accepted, and null hypothesis is rejected. Hence, this research found that there is correlation between students’ speaking skills and their self-confidence at English Language Education Department University of Muhammadiyah Malang
