The purpose of this study is to explore the motivation, likelihood, and consequences associated with Scotland\u27s upcoming independence referendum on September 18, 2014. Specific emphasis is placed on what the relationship of a possibly independent Scotland would look like with the European Union and international community at large. Established precedents of secession, separation, and dissolution are explored in light of the current referendum\u27s objectives. Scotland\u27s relationship with the European Union is vital for economic, societal, and global security reasons.
