Apprenticeship in the United States is a system of training that is found almost exclusively in the private sector, and is prominent in only a relatively few industries and occupations. In those crafts and industries, however, especially in unionized construction, apprenticeship is a strong, well established efficient system whose importance is growing over time. In this article we present a brief description of apprenticeship in America, an assessment of its strengths, and an overview of the important issues confronting the system in the 1970 s.Ray Marshall Center for the Study of Human Resource
