Managing volunteers in sports organizations: Ginasio de Santo Tirso handball club example

The object of the research is volunteer management in sports organizations. The aim of the study is to evaluate volunteer management in sports organizations. The objectives of the research: 1. To describe the theoretical aspects of volunteers’ management. 2. To discuss the main sport volunteer’s management components. 3. To evaluate the Volunteer’s Management organization in Ginasio de Santo Tirso handball club. The theoretical management features of volunteers are characterized by seven main practices: planning, recruitment, evaluation, guidance, training, activity management and identification of the activity. The volunteering activities have to be managed and coordinated. In other case the absence of people who organize volunteering in sport, training and education is left to young people who want to become volunteers on their own initiatives. Unmotivated enthusiasm sooner or later is gone, for this reason volunteer management has to be well planned and organised. It has been determined that the main components of volunteer management are: volunteer planning, volunteer recruitment, volunteer adaptation, volunteer training, and volunteer motivation. Often, sports organizations and clubs have no practical experience in improving efficiency programs. Volunteer management components work effectively only when used consistently. Based on the results of the survey, it can be argued that the management of volunteers in the Ginasio de Santo Tirso andebol handball club is provided is this sequence: volunteer planning, volunteer recruitment, volunteer adaptation, volunteer training, volunteer work management, volunteer evaluation. It has been noticed that all of these activities are carried out by this particular club and they try to involve as many people as possible in volunteering
