The Cohesion of Paterns of Hip Rotation Range of Motion and Chronic Low Back Pain

Around 80% of the population encounter pain in low back part of the spine, commonly also known as low back pain, at least once in the lifetime. This pathology seriously complicates the quality of life: it is oftentimes accompanied by negative economic and social consequences (e.g. incapacity for work) as well as psychological consequences (e.g. depression). From medical point of view, the biggest problem associated with this pathology is that the diagnostics of the reason for emergence of low back pain is extremely complicated (in even 90% of the cases, this reason is non-specific, no accurate mechanical dysfunction is detected that would result in the disorder). This significantly aggravates the treatment and rehabilitation process. One of the most novel ways of diagnostics for the back pain worldwide is the establishment of indicators for hip rotation range of motion in the hip joint. So far, the views of scientists on this issue are rather controversial. Therefore, taking into account the relevance of the problem and its importance for the practice of a physicaltherapist, the objective was to adjust the hypothesis that a particular relation exists between the pain in the low back part of the spine and the hip rotation range of motion in the hip joint. A research has been made to fulfill the following tasks: 1. Definition and evaluation of the hip rotation range of motion of the people suffering from chronic low back pain and their comparison by sex and age. 2. Definition and evaluation of the hip rotation range of motion of the people not suffering from chronic low back pain and their comparison by sex and age. 3. Definition and evaluation of the hip rotation range of motion of the people suffering and those not suffering from chronic low back pain and their comparison by sex and age. The research was made in AB „Vernitas“, Marijampolė, 2007. 57 test persons participated in the research, who were, by way of a survey, divided into two groups, depending on the low back pain. The groups comprised persons not suffering from low back pain (n = 28) and those suffering from it (n = 29). The research was a one-time endeavour in the in-house medical office of AB „Vernitas“. The outcome of the research analysis resulted in the following conclusions: 1. Total external hip rotation of people suffering from chronic low back pain is reliably (p<0.05) higher than the total internal hip rotation. The hip rotation range of motion of men is reliably (p<0.05) lower than that of women, though there is no reliable difference among the hip rotation range of motion of older men and older women. 2. There is no reliable difference among total external and internal hip rotation of people not suffering from chronic low back pain. Total internal hip rotation of men is reliably (p<0.05) lower than the total external hip rotation and reliably (p<0.05) lower than that of women; however, there is no reliable difference among the hip rotation range of motion of older men and older women. 3. There is no difference among any modes of the hip rotation range of motion in both compared groups; however the difference of younger man suffering from chronic low back pain is reliably (p<0.05) higher than that one of men not suffering from chronic low back pain.
