Selection of athletes as human resources in professional basketball teams

The subject of the research: selection criterion of athletes, who are considered to be human resources, in the professional basketball teams. The aim of the research: to analyze the selection criterion of human resources in professional basketball teams. The objectives of the research: 1. To analyze the conception of human resources selection in human resources management. 2. To disclose the methods and means that are applied in the selection of human resources, 3. To determine the selection criterion of athletes in professional basketball teams in Lithuania. Major results, conclusions and recommendations Human resources are important for organizations that are willing to operate in an effective way, by choose qualified employees. Therefore, the proper employee selection is one of the main component parts of successful organization. Human resources selection – the process exercised by the organization, by which the best candidate, which satisfy all the requirements raised by the organization, has all necessary knowledge and is able to complete all the given tasks, is chosen. There are no bad employees, only those who are unqualified to work certain job and develop their gifts. Not only the employee can be chosen wrongly, but this also happens with the athletes. As a result, in this paper the identification and selection of talented athletes is analyzed. Consquently, it is essential to analyze the selection of athletes, as human resources, in professional basketball teams, as talented athlete is rare and valuable treasure, of which big part is scattered in each generation, because of inability and ineptitude to identify it. After the empirical research, which investigate the main criterions of professional Lithuania‘s basketball players selection, it can be said that the majority of experts tend to choose the motivated athlete, who has well developed skills. The player, who understands the game, can make a good decision and has excellent motor/technical skills. Moreover, experts emphasized, as important criterions, the willingness to work hard, improve their abilities, train to be in the best possible shape and time that a player is spending for his trainings. Leaders, while choosing the basketball player, should make a decision about what kind of player they really need: the one which can show great performance in the current season, or one that gradually improve his skills and endeavour at perfection. Certainly, usually team leaders do not have a lot of time to select new players, therefore, firstly they should look at player‘s recommendations, what can help them to shorten the selection term, while looking for a proper and talented basketball player. The attention should be payed to the environment, wich surrounds the payer, because it van impact to the development of individual. Also, in the future the research might be expanded and the analysis of already selected basketball players could be done. The research should look at the criterions used to select players and the results they achieved in that season. If there were several basketball players that fall short of leader hopes, then there should be analysis made about the evaluation criterions, such as: to what criterions their attention was concentrated, what were their hopes and which criterions the player did not manage to accomplish.
