The associations between psychosocial factors at work and adverse health outcomes among prison workers (jailers)

Aims of the study: to evaluate the associations between psychosocial factors at work and adverse health outcomes among prison workers (jailers). Methods: totally 173 prison workers (jailers), attending the mandatory health examination in the Pravieniškės workhouse open Colony. The Lithuanian version of the Norwegian Negative Acts Questionnaire was used for the investigation of the prevalence and duration of negative acts among prison workers (jailers). The investigated prison workers (jailers) were asked about diagnosed by the physician health outcomes over the last twelve months. The questionnaires on the sense of coherence, post-traumatic stress disorder and minor psychological disorders (psychological distress) were distributed as well. The statistical software SPSS 19.0 for Windows was used in the statistical analysis. Results: It was found that the prison supervisors psychosocial working conditions are poor. 32.8 percent officials said that the job demands are high. 35.8 percent officials have had little opportunity to take control of their work, and 20.2 percent. officials did not had social support at work. The investigation revealed that peer social support for ifficials is very important (79.8 percent). It was established that 26 percent of officials experienced psychological distress and 23 percent had post-traumatic stress symptoms. More than one-third of office workers (31.8 percent) experienced psychological terror at work. 16.8 percent officials suffered fpsychological terror from their heads, and from colleagues (27.2 percent colleagues bullied, discriminated against one another at work). Supervisors felt distress significantly correlated with high standards of work. Post-traumatic stress symptoms among prison supervisors were associated with low control over their work, low social support at work, work-related negative behaviors number and psychological distress. As the causes of stress officials have indicated too high work supervision (64.2 percent) Officials. The most common form of negative behavior - receiving information is not timely and relevant (1.36 ± 0.599). And it is obvious that it has an effect to the quality of work. So, officials stress causes are diverse and not necessarily related to the specific duties. The study revealed that officials lifestyle does not have positive indicators also: 32.9 percent of officers smokes and 2.3 percent officials use alcohol once a week and often. The investigation found that the prison supervisors experienced psychological terror work reliably correlated with their physical inactivity. Physically active number of officials also constitutes a small proportion of all officers: a physically active is only 20.2 per cent of respondents.31.2 percent of officials are not engage in any physical activity. However, despite of the psychosocial environment experience, the majority of respondents assess their health as good (86.7 percent). And relatively small number of respondents assess their health as poor state of - 13.3 percent. Knowing findings it is important to take specific factors that promote the improvement of officials lifestyle indicators, since these, as the evident from the study showed, are that directly correlated with their psychological well-being. Conclusions: Significant associations between psychosocial factors at work and adverse physical and psychological health outcomes were found. Practical recommendations: The information about adverse psychosocial factors at work consequences on physical and mental health should be spread among prison workers (jailers) and prison managers should be spread.
