The quality of life of patients with respiratory diseases and effect of aquatic and hall physiotherapy on the respiratory capability

Work object: changes in respiratory system rates after aquatic and hall physiotherapy Work problem. In 2011 Lithuanian population of respiratory disease was 20.3% of all diseases. According to World Health Organization (WHO), 235 million people currently suffer from asthma, and asthma among children is the most common chronic disease. COPD affects approximately 64 million people around the world. There is an influence of physiotherapy on the respiratory system, as an effective intervention for patients with respiratory diseases, which reduces dyspnoea and fatigue, relieves symptoms, improves health-related quality of life, restores the patient's ability to perform their daily activities, thereby reducing the burden of disease and health self-care system (Lacasse et al., 2007; Singh et al., 2011). Work novelty. There is not enough information that examines the effects of aquatic therapy spirometry indices. Work aim: to evaluate the test in patients with respiratory disease quality of life and to identify effect of aquatic and hall physiotherapy on the respiratory capability. Work tasks: 1. To determine spirometric rates before and after aquatic and hall physiotherapy for the patients with respiratory disease. 2. To determine chest excursion before and after aquatic and hall physiotherapy for the patients with respiratory disease. 3. To evaluate quality of life for the patients with respiratory disease. 4. To identify and compare the correlations between age and individual quality of life domains. Work hypothesis: the respiratory diseases make quality of life worse and the aquatic physiotherapy increases spirometric rates and chest mobility rather than hall physiotherapy. Research methods and organisation: the research was carried out in UAB sanatorium „Pušyno kelias“, II rehabilitation in 2012 – 2013. In the research participated 40 patients, there were women and men with variety respiratory diseases, who were referred for outpatient rehabilitation. The participants were divided into two age groups: in I group were 20 (n = 20) and in II group were 20 (n = 20) participants. The patients average age was 53.2 ± 13.7 years. Patients were tested before and after aquatic and hall physiotherapy. In the hall of physiotherapy was performed 5 days per week, 1 time a day 30 minutes. There were applied various breathing exercises with or without physiotherapy tools (sticks, balls, gums). In the aquatic therapy was performed 5 days per week, 1 time a day 30minutes. The pool was from 150cm to 165cm depth. Water temperature was 33-36 ° C. There was applied active physiotherapy with various physiotherapy tools. For the patients of both groups respiratory system capability was measured before and after aquatic and hall physiotherapy by spyrometry, chest excursion – by tape-measure, the survey based on the standard quality of life questionnaire SF – 36 was carried out. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 19 'program package and the Excell 2007 Program. Conclusions: 1. Aquatic therapy significantly improved the patients respiratory capability than hall physiotherapy. 2. Aquatic therapy significantly increased chest excursion than hall physiotherapy. 3. It’s determined that the quality of life of patients got worse 4. Moderate correlation between physical activity and patients age was established, weak correlation between the health assessment, emotional state and patients age were established, and a very weak correlation between pain, vitality/energy social function and patients age were found
