Violence against women is globally pervasive as it cuts across boundaries of caste, class, culture, race, ethnicity and age. However, public authorities in India are only beginning to recognize violence against women as a violation of basic human rights of women. This is because violence against women is still not contextualized in its local-cultural setting, as a result, several violent practices against women, especially those against marginalized women, that have been customarily conceived and which tend to justify patriarchal norms often go unnoticed and unpunished.
