Amanda Woodward, and her husband Ezra, moved from Indianapolis to Newberg in 1880 after being encouraged to begin a Friends community. They purchased a farm, and sold it by the end of the decade so that Ezra could become the head of The Newberg Graphic. Amanda and Evangeline Martin raised $30,000 to fund the construction of Wood-Mar auditorium in 1910. The Woodwards, especially Ezra, were particularly keen on supporting the progressive need for new campus buildings.
