Kerry Irish talks about the presidency of George Washington, who was inaugurated in 1789. Professor Irish argues that Washington was aware his actions in office would set precedents, so despite French assistance to the Colonial Army against the British, Washington kept the U.S. neutral during the French Revolution, seeking to avoid entangling the U.S. in European affairs. Also, at the end of two terms, Washington voluntarily gave up power, and in his farewell address, he warned against loyalty to political parties over country
