A collaborative project examined the disease status of dolphins that stranded along the coastline of Florida from 1996 to 2002. This study reviewed 68 freshly dead stranded dolphins (57 Tursiops truncatus and 11 others from four species). Analysis of stranding demographics and histopathologic data from the Southeastern United States Stranding Network provided important information on the prevalence of lesions in relation to sex, geographic location, season, and length in T. truncatus. The histopathologic results obtained from the other species were from an extremely small sample size and thus only provided limited insight into the diseases impacting them.
