For enhancement of anatomy instruction, CT/MRI images of normal and pathological structures can be rendered as manipulable virtual volumes using segmentation and volume rendering software. While several excellent commercial volumetric rendering applications are available for purchase, open source software such as ITK-Snap and 3D-Slicer can generate very satisfactory results. Object files may then be examined: - as manipulable 2D images (online or locally) - through stereoscopic and autostereoscopic displays - through virtual reality apparatuses - as printed object
