Examined social skill and social competence in 25 visually impaired adolescents (aged 10–17 yrs) and their parents using a role-play test and self-report questionnaires. Ss were contrasted with 2 control groups including 25 adolescents with spina bifida and their parents and 25 nonhandicapped adolescents and their parents. Results indicate that visually impaired and spina bifida Ss exhibited few deficits in social skill. Self-report and parent-report questionnaires revealed that spina bifida Ss displayed more pervasive social difficulties than their visually impaired peers. Few group differences were found on behavioral components of social skill for mothers or fathers
