Current design recommendations for monopile foundations for offshore wind turbines were designed and tested for offshore oil and gas structures. Large-diameter (3.5 to 7 m) monopiles, like the ones used for offshore wind turbines do not follow the same elastic deformation relationships as those developed for small-diameter (0.5 to 1.5 m) monopiles, like the ones used for offshore oil and gas industry. Design recommendations and other publications differ by up to 90% in the prediction of displacement and rotation influence factors used in the design of rigid monopiles.
