Edward VI presents a far more formidable and less pathetic figure than most historians have indicated. The role he played in the Protestant Reformation in England has been greatly underestimated. It was the purpose of this paper to examine and re-evaluate the influence of Edward VI on religious developments during his reign, 1547-1553. Research for this paper had indicated a substantial involvement by Edward in religious innovations. His role in the development of a new Protestant liturgy was significant. He provided for the introduction of the English language into church services. He authorized the publication of books attacking the papacy.
