In aspen (Populustremuloides) woodlands of the southern Rocky Mountains, red-naped sapsuckers (Sphyrapicusnuchalis) are the predominant woodpecker, providing essential nest cavities for multiple bird species. Previous work indicated that sapsuckers avoid nesting in aspens far (>500m) from willows.
