The feeling of job insecurity, already strong those last 15 years in Europe, may still grow during the current economic crisis. This raises the question as to how such a feeling could be attenuated in the context of small firms. Can it be decreased by human resources practices oriented towards staff autonomy and participation ? To answer this question, the present quantitative research investigates the second wave ESS (European Social Survey) database built up in 2004-2005 in 25 european countries. Results show that in firms with less than 25 staff members, employees express a stronger feeling of insecurity.
