In der vorliegende Arbeit wird J.R.R. Tolkien's Repräsentation der Natur aus der Perspektive eines gewöhnlichen Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts analysiert. Die sozialen Umstände in der fiktionalen Welt gleichen England im frühen 20. Jahrhundert; der Hobbit ist ein Spiegelbild des englischen Landsmannes der in der Welt 'Mittelerde' das Äquivalent zur industriellen Revolution betrachtet. Was als friedliche und ruhige Landschaft beginnt, wird von der wissenschaftlichen Anschauung der Natur, im Buch dargestellt von der Figur Saruman, verschlungen.
