Storytelling in Chinese-American literature : Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan and Fae Myenne Ng

Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Konzept des "Storytelling" in Werken dreier chinesisch ? amerikanischer Autorinnen. Die Memoaren von Maxine Hong Kingston sowie die Romane von Amy Tan und Fae Myenne Ng, wurden hinsichtlich Erzählstruktur und Inhalt der in den Romanen enthaltenen traditionellen Geschichten analysiert. Zuerst wird ein Überblick über die Geschichte Chinas sowie über das "Storytelling" selbst gegeben. Weiters werden Gründe für Migration angeführt und eine Einführung in das literarische Schaffen amerikanischer Autoren mit chinesischem Migrationshintergrund gegeben. Der Hauptteil der Arbeit ist in drei Teile gegliedert, die die drei untersuchten Romane behandeln. Der erste Teil beschäftigt sich mit Kingstons "The Woman Warrior". Das Konzept der "Talk-Story" wird hier eingeführt und beschrieben. Es folgt Tans "The Joy Luck Club". Dieser Roman weist Parallelen zu Kingstons Werk auf; das ist von Relevanz für die vorliegende Analyse, nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil genau dieser Umstand im literarischen Diskurs mehrfach zur Sprache kommt. Es gibt dennoch auch Unterschiede und Ergänzungen, die an dieser Stelle der Arbeit beleuchtet werden. Zuletzt wird Ngs "Bone" hinsichtlich ähnlicher Strukturen, den Inhalt und das Erzählmuster betreffend, untersucht. Zusammenfassend kann gesagt werden, dass ?Storytelling? in Kingstons Memoaren und in Tans und Ngs fiktiven Romanen in gleicher Weise funktioniert. Es unterstützt die Figuren in ihrer Selbstfindung, löst Mutter-Tochter Konflikte und hilft die Kultur zu erhalten. Zusätzlich kann man sagen, dass in Kingstons Memoaren, wie auch in Tans und Ngs fiktiven Romanen, die Figuren sich durch das erzählen von Geschichten, gleichermaßen wie die Autorinnen, ihre eigene Identität schaffen.The aim of this thesis is to investigate and identify narrative patterns in storytelling originating from Chinese oral traditions. Two levels of storytelling have been looked into: the narrative and the content level. In order to answer the question whether there are similar patterns to be found in different novels, one a memoir and two fictional novels, the works of three contemporary Chinese American woman writers, Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan and Fae Myenne Ng, have been analyzed. The first part of the thesis gives a short outline of Chinese history and the concept of storytelling itself. Furthermore, in this chapter the reasons for Chinese migration and an introduction to Chinese writing in America are presented. The analysis part has been divided into three main chapters, dealing with the three novels mentioned above. Firstly, Kingston?s The Woman Warrior, where certain patterns such as the "talk-story" are identified, has been analyzed. Tan?s The Joy Luck Club, the second novel investigated, does show parallels to Kingston?s work, which has been a frequently discussed topic in the literary world. Nevertheless, there are differences and additions which shall be pointed out and discussed. Finally, Ng?s Bone has been analyzed in order to find the same patterns as in the other two novels regarding content as well as structure. In conclusion, the thesis intends to show that storytelling works in the same way in Kingston?s memoir, and Tan?s and Ng?s fictions novels. It empowers the characters for self-definition, resolves the mother-daughter conflict and helps preserve culture.
