What does that blood mean? : forms and functions of blood symbolism in Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'

Und dennoch wurde Blut als literarischem Symbol bisher kaum wissenschaftliche Aufmerksamkeit zuteil, vor allem im wichtigsten Vampirroman aller Zeiten: Dracula von Bram Stoker.Diese Masterarbeit will die Lücke schließen und zeigen, dass Blut in Dracula mehr ist als die Speise des Vampirs. Es ist nämlich ein komplexes Symbol mit unterschiedlichen, querverbundenen Bedeutungen und umfasst religiöse, sexuelle, medizinische, soziale und rassische Gesichtspunkte. Unter anderem steht Blut in Dracula für Leben ebenso wie für Tod, Wunden, Gewalt, Gefahr, aber auch Liebe, Leidenschaft, Sexualität, Speise, Gift, Lebenskraft, die Seele, Bundschlüsse, Heirat, Emotionen, Sünde, Sühne und sogar für Vererbung.Ziel dieser Masterarbeit ist es nicht nur, die verschiedenen Konnotationen des Blutes im Roman aufzuzählen und zu beschreiben, sondern auch die Funktionen des Blutsymbols zu benennen. Über Blutsymbolik werden beispielsweise Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen Charakteren aufgezeigt, Struktur auf der story- ebenso wie auf der discourse-Ebene erzeugt, durch Spektakel und Abjektion Horror bewirkt, zeitgenössische Themen und Tabus behandelt und Episteme und deren Grenzen in Frage gestellt. Das Blut ist ein vieldeutiges vielschichtiges Symbol, das den viktorianischen Glauben an Darstellbarkeit, Definitionen und klare und einfache Interpretationen dekonstruiert. Außerdem benutzt Stoker Blutsymbolik, um die Transzendenz wieder in einer von Wissenschaft und Empirie dominierten Welt zu verankern.?Nothing has so defined the vampire as its relationship to blood? states The Vampire Book: The Encyclopedia of the Undead (2010: 63). And yet, it seems as though researchers have not given appropriate consideration to blood as a literary symbol in the most influential vampire novel of all time: Bram Stoker?s Dracula. When it comes to Dracula criticism, many scholars have noted the obvious links to Christian theology but so far, no monograph has been devoted to a detailed study of blood symbolism in its entirety. This thesis intends to close this gap and to show that blood in Dracula is a complex symbol with various different but interconnected meanings, encompassing religious, sexual, medical, social and racial aspects. Among other things, blood in Dracula can stand for can stand for life but also for death, for wounds, violence and danger as well as for love, passion and sexuality, for food and nourishment but also for poison, for vigour and the soul as well as for bonding, marriage and the covenant, for emotions, for sin, for atonement and even for heritage. But the aim of the analysis is not only to list and describe the various connotations blood takes on in the novel. It also highlights the fact that Stoker?s variegated use of the blood symbol is not by mere chance or convenience but fulfils several functions. Blood and blood symbolism serve to establish similarities and differences between characters, to provide structure both on the story and on the discourse level, to discursivise contemporary concerns and taboos, to elicit horror as spectacle and as abject, and finally to question epistemes and epistemic boundaries. Blood in Dracula is an inherently ambiguous symbol, and its ambiguity destructs 19th-century belief in representability, definition and exclusive, fixed interpretations.
