A Critical discourse analysis: Hillary Rodham Clinton and women in the New York Times during the Presidential Candidacy Campaign 2008

Diese Arbeit behandelt die Repräsentation von Hillary Rodham Clinton und Frauen in der New York Times während des Präsidentschaftsvorwahlkampfes 2008 in Form einer Kritischen Diskursanalyse. Das Ziel ist herauszufinden, wie die Repräsentation von Rodham Clinton und von Frauen generell mit dem weiteren gesellschaftlichen Kontext korreliert, beziehungsweise, wie diese Repräsentation gängige soziale Praxis verstärkt oder dieser entgegenwirkt und somit gegebenenfalls zukünftige soziale Praxis in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika verändert. Die Basis dieser Arbeit ist die Annahme, dass sich soziale Praxis und Diskurs gegenseitig bedingen und ich werde Norman Fairclough?s dreidimensionales Modell der sozialen, diskursiven und linguistischen Praxis verwenden, um den Zusammenhang zwischen dem weiteren sozialen Kontext und der spezifischen linguistischen Analyse herzustellen. Im Zuge dieser Arbeit werden die gängigen sozialen Praktiken bezüglich Frauen diskutiert. Darüber hinaus wird konkrete Hintergrundinformation zur Rodham Clintons Präsidentschaftskampagne 2008 gegeben. In einem weiteren Schritt werden die diskursiven Praktiken der New York Times dargelegt. Weiters wird eine linguistische Analyse an dem Artikel ?Clinton?s Message, and Moment, Won the Day? durchgeführt. Die linguistische Analyse erstreckt sich von einer Untersuchung auf der Wortebene bis hin zur Textebene und Einbezug von außertextlicher Referenz, z.B. in Form von Intertextualität. Der letzte Schritt der Arbeit besteht aus einer Kombination der Ergebnisse der drei oben genannten Dimensionen. Soziale, diskursive und linguistische Praxis werden in Korrelation betrachtet, um herauszufinden inwieweit die New York Times gängige soziale Praxis bezüglich Frauen und Rodham Clinton unterstützt oder dieser entgegenwirkt. Die Arbeit endet mit einer kurzen kritischen Diskussion über die Grenzen und problematischen Aspekte dieser Kritischen Diskursanalyse.This paper presents a Critical Discourse Analysis of the representation of Hillary Rodham Clinton in The New York Times during her 2008 presidential candidacy campaign. In addition, the representation of women in The New York Times is examined. The aim of this paper is to investigate how the representation of Rodham Clinton and women correlates with the broader societal context and how this representation contradicts, re-enforces and influences current social practices in U.S. society. The basis of this Critical Discourse Analysis is the conception of social practice as constituting and constituted by discourse. Norman Fairclough?s three-dimensional model of social, discursive and textual practice is used to connect the linguistic analysis to the larger frame of societal actions and attitudes. In the course of this paper, the following steps of investigation are taken. Firstly, the social practices concerning femininity and feminine females in the United States of America are examined. This section further contains details on the concrete context of the 2008 candidacy campaigns. In a second step, The New York Times is investigated with regard to discursive practices. Thirdly, a linguistic analysis with a focus on the representation of Rodham Clinton and women in general is carried out on the article ?Clinton?s Message, and Moment, Won the Day?. The linguistic analysis of this article moves from an examination of the lexical level to suprasentential levels of analysis, e.g. the overall text organization. In a last step, the findings regarding social, discursive and textual practices are reviewed, compared and contrasted in order to point out the newspapers? reflecting and re-enforcing or contradicting and undermining current public action concerning women and Rodham Clinton in particular.
