Chirale Alkohole sind wichtige Bausteine in der chemischen und pharmazeutischen Industrie. Dabei ist der Einsatz von Saccharomyces cerevisiae als Ganz-Zell-Biotransformationssystem eine vielversprechende Alternative zur chemischen Synthese und zu isolierten Enzymen. Durch eine enzymatisch katalysierte NAD(P)H abhängige Reduktion eines Ketosubstrates, wird der gewünschte chirale Alkohol gebildet. Aus ökonomischen Gründen muss NAD(P)H regeneriert werden. Das wird von der Zelle durch Assimilation eines Cosubstrates erreicht. Häufig sind Cosubstratverbrauch und Ketoreduktion bezüglich des Coenzymverbrauchs nicht ausbalanciert.
