Using extreme solar events as proxy for the active young Sun: Implications for planetary atmosphere evolution

Eines der stärksten Flare Events, das jemals aufgezeichnet wurde, ist jenes das sich im späten Oktober/frühen November 2003 ereignete, dem sogenannten Halloween Event. Einige starke Flares der Klassifikation X und koronale Massenauswürfe hatten Auswirkungen auf die Atmosphäre unserer Erde: geomagnetische Störungen. Dadurch dehnte sich die Thermosphere aus, woduch sich die Temperatur in der obersten Schicht der Atmosphäre, der Exosphäre, erhöhte. So genannte low Earth orbiting Satelliten, wie CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) oder GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment), messen die zeitlichen und räumlichen Variationen der Atmosphärendichte mit Beschleunigunsmessern. Während dieser Periode ergab sich durch Messungen ein Anstieg der Dichte von etwa 300-400 %. Durch die Analyse eines starken Flares ist es Ziel dieser Arbeit Verbindungen zwischen Flare Phänomenen und der Aktivität von solaren Proxies unterschiedlichen Alters herzustellen. Die Beobachtungsdaten wurden vom Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) und Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) Satelliten verwendet, um die solare Strahlung des X17.2 Flares am 28. Oktober 2003 im extremen Ultraviolettbereich näher zu untersuchen. Der Bereich im EUV ist ein wichtiger Wellenlängenbereich, da EUV Flüsse die obere Atmosphäre beeinflussen und zu Ionisation von Atomen und Dissoziation von Molekülen führen. Die EUV-Spektren werden dann mit Spektren von sonnenähnlichen jungen Sternen unterschiedlichen Alters verglichen. Stimmt nun das Flare-Spektrum mit einem der jungen solaren Proxies überein, kann damit die Situation und Entwicklung der jungen Sonne reproduziert und simuliert werden. Für den X17.2 Flare am 28. Oktober 2003 wurde ein Alter von 2.3 Gigajahren bestimmt. Diese Annäherung ist ein wesentlicher Schritt in der Untersuchung der Entwicklung von der frühen Stickstoff-Atmosphäre der Erde und auch erdähnlichen Stickstoff-Atmosphären von extrasolaren Planeten.One of the most extreme flare events ever recorded is the so called Halloween Event, which occurred in late October/early November 2003. Lots of strong X class flares and coronal mass ejections lead to consequences for the atmosphere of our Earth: geomagnetic disturbances. Thus, the thermosphere expanded, by what the temperature in the upper part of the atmosphere, the exosphere, increased. Low Earth orbiting spacecrafts, such as CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) or GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment), measure the variations of the atmospheric density on temporal and spatial scales. An increase in density of about 300-400 % is observed during the Halloween period. Aim of this thesis regarding a strong flare is to obtain connections between these events and the activity of solar proxies of different age, which are solar-like G-stars with parameters similar to the Sun. Observational data of the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) and the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellites are retrieved for the investigation of the solar radiation of the X17.2 flare on October 28, 2003 in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength range. The extreme ultraviolet is an important wavelength range because EUV fluxes influence the upper atmosphere, where they lead to ionization of atoms and dissociation of molecules. These EUV spectra are compared to spectra of solar-like stars of different age. If the solar flare spectrum matches spectra of young solar analogs they can reproduce and simulate the situation and evolution of the young Sun. For the X17.2 flare on October 28, 2003 an age of 2.3 Gyr is determined.
