Apolipoprotein A-IV ist ein multifunktionelles Protein, das überwiegend im Darm exprimiert wird und eine bedeutende Rolle im Lipidstoffwechsel einnimmt. ApoA-IV aktiviert die Lecithin-Cholesterin-Acyltransferase sowie den Efflux von zellulärem Cholesterin und ist daher maßgeblich am reversen Cholesterintransport beteiligt. Somit könnte apoA-IV das Atheroskleroserisiko senken. Desweiteren hat apoA-IV noch viele andere physiologische Eigenschaften, es wirkt antioxidativ, antiinflammatorisch und fördert die akute Sättigungswirkung.
