The issue of poverty in George Orwell's early fictional and non-fictional writings (1920 - 1939)

Diese Arbeit soll beweisen, dass das Thema Armut ein wichtiger gestalterischer und prägender Faktor in der Entwicklung von George Orwell als Autor sozialkritischer Texte war. Des Weiteren soll aufgezeigt werden, dass es eine komplexe Beziehung zwischen Orwell und den Armen gegeben hat, und dass diese Beziehung zu einem Reifungsprozess in Orwells Persönlichkeit und Schreibstil beigetragen hat.Die ersten Kapitel beinhalten eine kurze Biographie und einen historischen Hintergrund zur großen Wirtschaftskrise und Zahlen zur Arbeitslosigkeit in England.Der Hauptteil der Arbeit enthält Primärquellenzitate und eine eingehende Analyse der Haupttexte von Orwell. Die für die Arbeit herangezogenen Texte decken die Schaffensperiode von 1920 bis 1939 ab. Alle verwendeten Texte behandeln die Armut in England, mit Ausnahme von Down and Out in Paris and London. Alle zum Zitieren verwendeten primären Textquellen beschäftigen sich mit verschiedenen Aspekten der Armut, wie sie sich Orwell offenbarten. Der Textkorpus beinhaltet Romane, Reportagen, Essays und Tagebücher. Briefe und private Korrespondenz wurden für diese Arbeit nicht verwertet, denn das würde den Rahmen der Arbeit sprengen. Was die Struktur der Arbeit betrifft, hat sich der Autor dafür entschieden, die Primärtexte in chronologischer Weise des Erscheinens durchzuarbeiten. Zusammen mit jedem Primärtext werden verlässliche akademische Arbeiten konsultiert und verglichen, um Sichtweisen und Positionen des akademischen Diskurses aufzuzeigen. Durch das chronologische Vorgehen soll der literarische Reifungsprozess Orwells evident gemacht werden. Während in seinen ersten Texten noch als Beobachter erscheint, entwickelt sich der Autor von Roman zu Roman, verbessert seinen Stil, wird authentischer und glaubhafter, wie in seinen Reportagen, als auch in seinen Romanen, wobei er allerdings nie ein Schriftsteller der Arbeiterklasse wird.This thesis claims that the issue of poverty is a dominant imaginative force in the development of George Orwell as a writer of social criticism. Furthermore, it will be proved that there is a complex relationship between Orwell and the Poor and that this relationship led to a maturation of the author?s personality and style. The first chapters of this paper include a short biography of George Orwell and background information on the Depression and the figures of unemployment in England. The main part of this study is comprised of poverty related quotations and an in-depth analysis of these primary works by Orwell. The texts and quotations cited will cover the period from 1920 to 1939. Furthermore, all chosen texts deal with the situation of poverty in England. All the primary works cited and selected deal with the various aspects of poverty seen through the eyes of Orwell. These texts consist of novels, reports, essays and diaries. Letters and private correspondence is not used for the thesis because a detailed analysis of all available texts would exceed the boundaries of this paper.Structuring the thesis, the author has decided to deal with the primary texts in chronological order. Together with each primary text, reliable academic texts are consulted and compared with, to show the viewpoints and standings of academic discourse. By reading Orwell chronologically, a process of literary maturation becomes evident.
