La spatialité des dommages et risques environnementaux comme point de convergence entre géographie, écologie et politique

International audienceThe analysis of complex systems such as those captured by scientific ecology shows that the occurrence of damaging events is difficult to predict. Moreover, most of these unpredictable events will be those with the strongest echoes, giving full meaning to the concept of risk as cross between hazard and vulnerability. Each of these two components of risk has a spatial dimension more or less obvious, and to understand the natural risk, occurrence and spatial extension of the hazard and the vulnerability should be analyzed jointly. Thus, we show that for environmental risk, the question of "where?" posed by the prediction refers certainly to ecological and geographical problems, but also economic and political. We therefore argue that the problems posed by the intersection of the two uncertainties (the spatial distribution of the hazard and the distribution of issues on the territory) must induce strengthen links between reflexive geography, ecology and politics.L'analyse des systèmes complexes tels que ceux appréhendés par l'écologie scientifique montre que la survenance d'événements dommageables est difficilement prévisible. Plus encore, les plus imprévisibles de ces événements seront ceux qui auront les plus forts retentissements, donnant ainsi tout son sens à la notion de risque, croisement entre aléa et vulnérabilité. Chacune de ces deux composantes du risque comporte une dimension spatiale plus ou moins évidente, et pour appréhender le risque naturel, il convient d'analyser conjoin- tement occurrence et extension spatiales, de l'aléa comme de la vulnérabilité. Ainsi, nous montrons qu'en matière de risque environnemental, la question du "où ?" posée par la prédiction renvoie à des problématiques certes écologiques et géographique, mais également économiques et politiques. Nous soutenons donc que les problèmes posés par le croisement des deux incertitudes que sont la distribution spatiale de l'aléa et la répartition des enjeux sur le territoire doivent amener à renforcer les liens réflexifs entre géographie, écologie et politique
