International audienceThis paper explores a little known profession having recently emerged following the redefining of the waste sector: industrial waste sorter. Analysing the activity of this employee in the field of sustainable development, representative of the green job market, allows us to better understand the difficult association between labor and environment. In this article we introduce the preliminary results of a research program on behalf of the ADEME (The French Agency for Environment and Energy Management). The observations and interviews with sorters show the conditions of a physically and mentally challenging job. They also help to sketch the potentials of this new profession.
