This article reviews a project launched in 1974 by a team of researchers from the North Dakota State University interested in discovering the implications of coal development on the atomospheric environment and plant ecosystems of selected sited in western North Dakota. Headings in this review are: climatology of inversions in western North Dakota, engineering aspects of air and thermal pollution, base line data for grassland communities near Stanton and physiological responses
