In response to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the United States Congress passed the "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism" (USA PATRIOT ACT) Act on October 25, 2001. Its objective was to reduce and prevent as well as improve the response to terrorist acts. It also aims to track down terrorists and apprehend them. This paper examines this piece of legislation from a civil liberties point of view and attempts to examine the possible violations of civil liberties that could occur as a result of this legislation.
