Corticostriatal brain circuitries play an essential role in basic and high-level functions of the human brain, such as motor control, goal-director behavior, cognition, as well as learning and memory. Growing evidence supports a “gating” function of basal ganglia, particularly the striatum, within the motor and cognitive domains.
