New graduate nurses have a role transition period from the educational setting to the practice setting. Facing the challenges of a new professional role without a monitored orientation program leads to job dissatisfaction. Orientation programs that have mentors assigned to new graduate nurses promote positive role socialization and may increase the job satisfaction of the new graduate nurse. The purpose of this study is to examine differences in job satisfaction in two groups of new graduate nurses, one group that has a traditional orientation program and the other group that has a traditional orientation with a mentor socialization program.
