Comparison of androgyny levels in team and individual sport female athletes

The purpose of this study was to compare the androgyny level of Division I college female athletes participating in team and individual sports. Androgyny was measured by the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI). Participating team sports included field hockey, basketball, and softball, while individual sports included swimming, gymnastics, and track and field. The inventory was administered to a total of 100 subjects. Results were obtained by using the femininity and masculnity raw scores in a chi square analysis. The data were subjected to three separate chi square analyses, all at the p<.05 level of significance.Only three sports; track and field, gymnastics and field hockey, had a majority (over 50%) of athletes rate androgynous as measured by the BSRI.
