In 1972, a major event in intercollegiate athletics changed sport history. The event was the passing of the Educational Amendment, known as Title IX. Title IX, stated no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance (The Educational Amendment Act 1972, U.S.C. section 1681). These changes have been both positive and negative. Positively in the last several decades it has increased the number of women athletes participating in intercollegiate sports.
