Historical Empathy as a Pedagogical Strategy

Relatório de Estágio do Mestrado em Ensino de História no 3º ciclo do Ensino Básico e no Ensino Secundário apresentado à Faculdade de LetrasDue to the perception of the need to replace the traditional way of teaching History in the classroom, since the 70s, studies have started to emerge that have proposed a reinvention of this old model These new propositions seek to incorporate more significant learning and bringing the teaching of History closer to the historiographic production of historians, being able to apply them to all ages, not requiring extraordinary reasoning for that, but an effective work in the adoption of strategies that facilitate historical understanding. Hence, studies in historical empathy begin to emerge, a goal achieved when the individual manages to put himself in the place of the historical agent, without imposing his values, beliefs and worldviews in this exercise, just like the historians.The report in question aims to present the path from the elaboration of this concept to its incorporation in national school curriculum, as a resource that maximizes learning and develops, when properly worked, a keen critical and citizen sense in students. Furthermore, in the current context, in which the students' lack of interest in the subject of History is growing, it is a strategy that is capable of reversing this situation. And it was precisely this verification that I was able to prove in the context of the internship, in my supervised teaching practice carried out at the Escola Basica Martim de Freitas, located in Coimbra, with an 8th grade class, during the 2020/2021 school year. In this study, I carried out a series of activities, which were intended to measure the levels of empathy of students throughout the school year and, at the end of this journey, I sought to correlate the levels of historical empathy achieved with the results in the History discipline.Em virtude da perceção da necessidade de substituir a forma tradicional de se lecionar História em sala de aula, desde os anos 70 começam a surgir estudos que vêm propondo uma reinvenção desse antigo modelo. Essas novas proposições buscam incorporar aprendizagens mais significativas e que aproximem o ensino da História da sala de aula daquela produção historiográfica dos historiadores, podendo aplicá-las em todas as idades, não demandando para isso um raciocínio extraordinário, mas sim, um trabalho efetivo na adoção de estratégias facilitadoras da compreensão histórica. Por conseguinte, começam a surgir os estudos em empatia histórica, uma realização alcançada quando o indivíduo consegue se colocar no lugar do agente histórico, sem impor nesse exercício seus valores, crenças e visões de mundo, tal como os historiadores. O relatório em questão visa apresentar o percurso da elaboração deste conceito até sua incorporação em currículos nacionais escolares, como sendo um recurso que maximiza as aprendizagens e desenvolve, quando bem trabalhado, um aguçado senso crítico e cidadão nos alunos. Para além disso, no contexto atual, em que diminui o interesse na disciplina de História por parte dos alunos, trata-se de uma estratégia que se mostra capaz de reverter essa situação. E foi justamente essa verificação que pude comprovar no contexto do estágio, em minha prática pedagógica supervisionada realizada na Escola Básica Martim de Freitas, situada em Coimbra, com uma turma do 8º ano de escolaridade, durante o ano letivo de 2020/2021.
