NASA’s Subsonic Fixed Wing (SFW) Project places high importance on reducing fuel burn, nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions and noise exposure in future generations of aircraft. Because the amount of fuel burned is directly proportional to the amount of CO2 emissions, reducing fuel burn will also reduce CO2 emissions. However, the SFW goals only incorporate individual aircraft performance and do not account for how fleet-level emissions will change with the introduction of new, more efficient aircraft, which may change due to the airline’s use of the new aircraft.
