Scientists involved in space exploration are always looking for ways to accomplish more with their limited budgets. Mission designers can decrease operational costs by crafting trajectories with low launch costs, short time-of-flight, or low propellant requirements. Gravity-assist maneuvers and low-thrust, high-efficiency ion propulsion can be of great help. This dissertation describes advances in methods to design and optimize interplanetary spacecraft trajectories. particularly for missions using gravity-assist maneuvers or low-thrust engines (or both). The first part of this dissertation describes a new, efficient, two-step methodology to design and optimize low-thrust gravity-assist trajectories. Models for the launch vehicle, solar arr...
