This thesis examines worker-consciousness in the United States. It is an attempt to bridge the gap between the theories that focus on structural forces, and theories that concentrate on social-psychological determinants of worker-consciousness. It will use class as a predictor of consciousness. However, it will argue that gender is also a major predictor of worker consciousness. Finally, this thesis will use the social-psychological concepts of self-esteem and mastery as intervening variables between gender and worker consciousness
