This study analyzes the interrelationships of text and illustration in a number of Middle English literary manuscripts, in particular, in manuscripts of John Gower\u27s Confessio Amantis. The study does not deal with the style of the manuscript pictures; nor does it attempt to establish that the pictures represent the artist\u27s response to the literary work. Instead, it examines the kinds of literary and critical problems that, in their manuscript context, the illustrations invite a reader to consider.
