Full resolution digital color display devices often use 24 bits to represent the color at each pixel of an image. This allows a choice of over 16 million colors at each pixel. However, due to reasons of economy in data representation and constraints on the size of the video memory, many low-cost display devices can only display a small number of colors simultaneously. In this case, it is necessary to quantize the image to a small set of colors, called a palette.
