Il parcourt les archives pour éclairer trois moments de l’histoire éditoriale de Wright. L’irruption de Wright sur le marché du livre américain (Un Enfant du pays ou Native Son, 1940), les négociations la fabrique d’un best- seller (Black Boy, 1945) et la difficile continuité d’une carrière en exil (The Long Dream, 1958), sont retracées grâce aux correspondances avec divers acteurs éditoriaux.
