Version d'auteurInternational audienceThis contribution aims at studying the Western medieval construction of Basil of Cesarea, as a monastic legislator, and as the author of a “rule” conceived as the exact eastern symmetry of what Benedict’s rule represented for the Western monasticism. This study first draws up the background of this story: the Latin translation of Basil’s Asketikon by Rufinus, and the circulation of this text in the first centuries of the Middle Ages. Then the contribution focuses on the expression of regula S. Basilii, which expanded in Southern Italy between the IXth and the Xth centuries, and reflected the influence of Carolingian monastic reform upon the Western conception of cenobitical rules.
