Farm, Hunt, Feast, Celebrate: Animals and Society in Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Age Northern France

International audienceBuilding on the experience of twenty-five years of fieldwork and archaeozoological analyses carried out during research projects in various regions of northern France, this book examines animal husbandry and hunting practices over the 5000 year period from the first sedentary groups to the more evolved societies, corresponding to the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Age.This approach is based on the processing of a very large amount of data, from sources as varied as settlements, assembly places, cemeteries and other distinctive sites. The study looks in detail at domestic consumption in houses, villages and enclosures, as well as addressing feasting, ceremonial deposition and the role of animals in the funerary sphere.Intra-site and inter-site spatial analysis of a portion of the data has also been one of the keys to gaining certain levels of understanding and interpretation of the societies in question.By examining the evidence at different spatial scales, from site to territorial level, a picture can be outlined of the probable social mechanisms at work. This approach highlights the changing complexity of practices involving people and animals.This book offers a contribution to the broad field of research into how people interact with their natural, cultural and social environments.S’appuyant sur l’expérience de vingt-cinq ans de travaux de terrain et d’analyses archéozoologiques menés lors de projets de recherche dans diverses régions du nord de la France, cet ouvrage examine les pratiques d’élevage et de chasse au cours d’une période de 5000 ans, depuis les premiers groupes sédentaires jusqu’aux sociétés plus évoluées, correspondant au Néolithique, à l’Age du Bronze et à l’Age du Fer.Cette approche repose sur le traitement d’un très grand nombre de données, issues de sources aussi variées que les habitats, les lieux de rassemblement, les cimetières et autres sites distinctifs. L’étude examine en détail la consommation domestique dans les maisons, les villages et les enclos, tout en abordant la question des festins, des dépôts cérémoniels et du rôle des animaux dans la sphère funéraire.L’analyse spatiale intra-site et inter-site d’une partie des données a également été l’une des clés pour atteindre certains niveaux de compréhension et d’interprétation des sociétés en question.L’examen des indices à différentes échelles spatiales, du site au niveau territorial, permet d’esquisser une image des mécanismes sociaux probables à l’œuvre.
